Romania's public debt increased significantly in August 2026, reaching over 1.230 trillion lei, with an average daily rise of 806.45 million lei. This marks a nearly threefold increase since 2020. The debt as a percentage of GDP rose to 61.1%. Most of the debt is in government bonds, with a notable portion in national currency and euros. The internal public debt reached 620.39 billion lei, while external debt was 609.66 billion lei. The rapid growth of public debt has been evident over the past six years, with a sharp increase noted in 2024, surpassing 50% of GDP.
