Lawyer Gheorghe Piperea, an MEP from AUR, announces the initiation of lawsuits against banks accused by the Competition Council of manipulating the ROBOR index, claiming that interest rates were inflated by 20-25% monthly. He states that the Council's decision will support clients in recovering overcharged interest from 2018 to 2026. Piperea estimates that 1.5-2 million contracts need adjustments to reduce interest rates. Major banks, including Banca Transilvania and BRD, plan to contest the Council's decision, asserting they acted legally. The Competition Council imposed fines totaling 3.73 billion lei on ten banks for violating competition laws.
