Over 200 tarantulas have been reported in Austria since early September, with two species identified. The southern Russian tarantula is the largest in Central Europe, while the black-bellied tarantula is smaller. Most sightings are from Styria, Lower Austria, and Burgenland. As autumn approaches, these spiders seek shelter and may enter homes. Some findings surprised experts, as the southern Russian tarantula was found in areas previously unreported. Both species belong to the wolf spider family and can bite if threatened, but bites are rarely dangerous to healthy individuals. The Naturschutzbund advises against harming these spiders and suggests safely relocating them if found indoors.
