The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, under Russian control in southeastern Ukraine, has lost external power supply and is relying on backup generators for reactor cooling. The plant, which is not generating electricity, requires external power to maintain safe temperatures for nuclear fuel. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that the Ferosplavna power line was disconnected, but the cause is still unknown. The plant has enough fuel reserves to operate emergency diesel generators for about two weeks. Since Russia's occupation in early 2022, both Moscow and Kyiv have accused each other of actions threatening nuclear safety.
