A professor calculated that finding a needle in a haystack could take about 35 hours of continuous searching, with a 23% success rate if searching eight hours a day. Jeffrey Rosenthal from the University of Toronto estimated the search duration by dividing the haystack into one-centimeter cubes. Checking one cube per second would require nearly 35 hours to search the entire volume. Although the needle could be found quickly, the search could extend to a day and a half. Flattening the haystack would increase the search area. Such problems are also relevant in training AI models to identify distinct objects, though AI has not been widely applied to probability issues yet.
