As of August 2026, Romania's public debt exceeded 1,230 billion lei, marking an increase from the previous month. The debt as a percentage of GDP rose to 61.1%. Medium and long-term debt also increased significantly, with most of the debt represented by government bonds. The internal public debt reached 620.39 billion lei, while external debt amounted to 609.66 billion lei, both showing upward trends compared to July 2026.
