New simulations indicate that the outer planets of our solar system could experience chaotic orbits and potential collisions after the Sun becomes a red giant. This transformation, expected in about 5 billion years, will lead to the Sun expanding significantly and eventually cooling into a white dwarf. Unlike previous studies suggesting stability, recent findings show that irregular mass loss from the Sun could destabilize the orbits of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, resulting in extreme changes and possible destruction of these planets. In 96% of the most extreme simulations, collisions occurred among the planets due to these chaotic movements, suggesting that similar planetary systems around white dwarfs may be less stable than previously thought.
