The Schwarzmilzferner glacier in the Allgäu Alps is expected to completely melt by 2027 due to significant ice loss this summer. Researchers reported a reduction of over four meters in thickness and nearly half of its volume. Christoph Mayer, a glaciologist, noted that the glacier has lost its ability to flow, marking its status as a glacier effectively gone. This trend of glacier disappearance is not isolated, as many smaller glaciers in the Alps are also vanishing. Mayer predicts that the entire Eastern Alps could be ice-free between 2060 and 2070 due to increasingly hot summers.
