The European Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into potential fraud involving EU funds for the modernization of the Madrid-Sevilla high-speed train line, following a tragic accident that resulted in 69 deaths. Agents from the Central Operational Unit of the Civil Guard visited various institutions to collect documents related to the misuse of funds. The investigation focuses on three contracts totaling €136.4 million, funded by the EU's NextGeneration and Regional Development Funds. The contracts include upgrades to safety systems and track switches, with previous issues reported in the safety system leading to the accident. This is not the first investigation into this railway section, as another inquiry was opened earlier this year after a separate fatal incident.
