Paul Mackenzie, leader of the Good News International Church in Kenya, was sentenced to 200 years in prison for the deaths of 191 people, mostly children. He preached that the world would end in August 2023 and encouraged followers to starve themselves and their children to reach heaven. The court found that 183 victims died from starvation, while others were suffocated or beaten. Judge Diana Kavedza opted against the death penalty, believing it would not deter followers. Survivors reported that deaths were celebrated as a union with Jesus. Over 400 bodies have been exhumed from the Shakahola forest, with more charges expected against Mackenzie and others.
