The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) has launched an investigation into potential fraud involving EU funds for the modernization of the high-speed railway line between Madrid and Seville. This inquiry focuses on safety and communication systems following a tragic accident that occurred in late October. Investigations are being conducted at three Spanish institutions, including ADIF and the Spanish Court of Auditors. The EPPO aims to determine if there were fraudulent activities related to the EU funding for safety upgrades. This is not the first investigation into EU funds for this railway, as another case was opened in March 2026 regarding maintenance funds.
