A new study challenges the long-held belief that supernovae played a crucial role in clearing cosmic fog in the early Universe. Researchers suggest that instead of aiding the escape of ultraviolet radiation, supernovae may have blocked some of it, hindering the ionization of hydrogen. This contradicts previous assumptions that strong galactic winds from supernovae facilitated the release of ionizing radiation. The study, published in Nature Astronomy, analyzed six galaxies using the Hubble Space Telescope and found that older galaxies with faster winds allowed less ionizing radiation to escape. These findings indicate that supernovae might have slowed down the reionization process, necessitating further observations to clarify the mechanisms behind the end of the Universe's dark age.
