A submerged power plant in the Pacific Ocean successfully generated more energy than it consumed during a brief test. This experiment, conducted by Endurance Energy near an active underwater volcano, marks a significant step in harnessing geothermal energy from ocean depths. The system, named Adélie, produced a median power output of around 2 kilowatts, peaking at 16.5 kilowatts. Despite initial challenges in extracting hydrothermal fluid, the plant demonstrated its potential to provide a reliable electricity source independent of weather conditions. Endurance plans to develop a commercial facility in Tonga by 2027, aiming to deliver affordable electricity.
