The European Commission has decided to keep a 2018 proposal for taxing digital services despite previous plans to withdraw it. This decision comes as eight EU member states have already implemented national digital taxes, while international negotiations at the OECD have stalled following the US withdrawal. The Commission's final work program for 2027 retains one of the two proposals aimed at taxing the digital economy. European Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič emphasized that maintaining the proposal invites further discussions among EU legislators. The 2018 initiatives aimed to create a common tax framework for large tech companies outside the EU, particularly from the US, but have faced obstacles due to the requirement for unanimous agreement among member states. With eight EU countries adopting their own digital tax forms, the lack of a unified directive has led to fragmentation within the bloc, while global negotiations have slowed significantly after the US exit from talks.
