The Romanian Ministry of Justice clarified the reasons for Alina Apostol's continued imprisonment in China, despite requests for her transfer since 2019. The transfer is contingent upon the payment of damages to the victims of her crime, which remains unpaid. Apostol was sentenced to 13.5 years for bank card fraud and is currently serving her sentence in China. Although a Romanian court approved her transfer in 2023, the lack of a treaty between Romania and China complicates the process. Marius Balo, a fellow Romanian prisoner, has gone on hunger strike to protest the handling of her case, citing her deteriorating health. The Ministry insists that it cannot pay the required damages and is working with Apostol's family to find solutions. Reports indicate that she is being monitored and receiving some support from the Romanian embassy.
