Bitdefender researchers have identified a ransomware attack in Europe that utilizes AI for infiltration and operation phases. This attack targeted a group of schools in the UK and is the first documented case of its kind in Europe. The attackers employed a typical ransomware strategy, including data theft and unauthorized account creation, but also demonstrated AI-like behavior in task execution. The investigation revealed that some tasks were performed by humans while others showed patterns consistent with AI involvement. The use of AI in such attacks could lead to more frequent hybrid attacks by 2027, although it also leaves detectable traces for security teams.
