A legislative proposal to establish April 7 as a national holiday in honor of Mircea Lucescu has received favorable approval from the Culture Committee. Supported by 35 parliamentarians from various political parties, the initiative aims to commemorate Lucescu's contributions to Romanian sports. If adopted, the day would feature sports competitions, cultural activities, and commemorative events organized by various institutions and NGOs. The proposal must still be voted on by the Chamber of Deputies and then signed by President Nicușor Dan to become law, marking a first in Romania for a sports figure to be officially recognized with a national holiday. A similar precedent was set in 2026, declared "Nadia Comăneci Year" to honor the gymnast's achievements.
