Singurul oraș din România care nu exista pe hartă în timpul comunismului. Comoara mortală pe care era amplasat • Newsweek România

Ștei, the only city in Romania not shown on maps during communism, was built over uranium reserves crucial for Soviet nuclear ambitions. Initially a small settlement, it was transformed into a nuclear city by Soviet authorities between 1952 and 1956. The city operated under secrecy, with uranium extraction leading to health issues among workers due to radiation exposure. After the Soviet withdrawal in 1965, the city shifted focus to other minerals and developed its industry. In 1996, it reverted to its original name, Ștei, and currently has a population of 6,371.
