The first beauty contest in Romania took place on July 1, 1912, in Bucharest's Oteteleșanu Park, attracting over 10,000 spectators. Organized by the newspaper 'Minerva', it featured more than 200 contestants judged by notable personalities. The winner, Viorica Petrescu, received a prize of 500 lei, a significant amount for that time. Although the event was successful, it was not repeated due to the onset of World War I. Beauty contests re-emerged in the interwar period under the title Miss Romania, with the first winner being Magda Demetrescu in 1929. Subsequent contests saw Romanian representatives achieving notable placements in international competitions. After a hiatus during the communist regime, beauty contests returned in the late 1970s and gained popularity again post-1990.
