Today marks the deadline for local and county councilors in Romania to choose between their elected positions and state employment due to a new incompatibility law. The law, effective since August 9, 2026, affects those holding both a councilor mandate and a public sector job. Failure to resign from one role may lead to intervention by the National Integrity Agency. Critics, including europarliamentarian Rareș Bogdan, accuse Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan of manipulating the situation to replace resigning councilors with loyal party members. Teachers and certain researchers are exempt from this law, but many others face uncertainty regarding their employment status.
