International Vulture Awareness Day, celebrated on September 5, 2026, highlights the importance of vultures in ecosystems and their conservation. Vultures play a crucial role in removing animal carcasses, thus preventing disease spread and recycling nutrients. Romania has recently reintroduced the griffon vulture after a 70-year absence, with ongoing projects aimed at restoring vulture populations in the Carpathians. The event, initiated in 2006, aims to raise awareness about vultures' ecological significance and the threats they face, as around 70% of vulture species are threatened. The upcoming LIFE project will further support the reintroduction of vultures in Southern Carpathians, addressing the dangers they encounter, such as poisoning and habitat loss.
