This day highlights the importance of recognizing and protecting the rights of deaf individuals, ensuring full access through national sign languages. Established by the UN, this day coincides with the International Week of Deaf People, emphasizing the need for effective respect of deaf rights in all life areas. The date also marks the 75th anniversary of the World Federation of the Deaf, founded on September 23, 1951, and the 20th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In Romania, the Romanian Sign Language is recognized as the native language for the deaf community, ensuring access to public information and education. The World Federation of the Deaf encourages buildings to be illuminated in blue to raise awareness about sign languages and the unity of deaf communities.
