The U.S. administration has sought to rally NATO allies in a campaign to systematically dismantle the International Criminal Court (ICC), straining already tense transatlantic relations. During a closed-door meeting, U.S. envoy Matthew Whitaker urged NATO countries to withdraw from the ICC's founding document, the Rome Statute. The U.S. has pressured allies to consider the ICC as a threat and has imposed sanctions on ICC officials. The ICC, established in 2002, prosecutes serious international crimes, including genocide and war crimes. In response to U.S. actions, ICC President Tomoko Akane warned that such sanctions could undermine international legal order.
