Rugby federations from Romania, Georgia, Spain, and Portugal are advocating for a return to a six-team format for the European Championship starting in 2028. Alin Petrache, president of the Romanian Rugby Federation, highlighted the challenges of the current eight-team format, which complicates scheduling and logistics for matches. The alliance aims to provide a more predictable calendar, allowing teams and fans to plan ahead. Petrache emphasized the importance of stability in match scheduling for both teams and supporters. The proposed changes have been discussed with Rugby Europe and World Rugby, with the goal of enhancing the rugby experience for fans and improving the development of the sport in these nations. Additionally, Romania plans to participate in the 2027 World Cup and engage in matches in South Africa.
