Romania has begun receiving K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzers from South Korean company Hanwha, with plans to produce more locally. The contract, valued at nearly $1 billion, includes 54 K9 units and 36 K10 ammunition resupply vehicles by 2029. The initial batch of 18 will arrive from South Korea, while the rest will be manufactured at a new facility in Petrești, Dâmbovița, which aims for 80% localization. This project marks Hanwha's first industrial investment in Europe and is expected to create up to 2,000 jobs. The K9 system enhances Romania's defense capabilities and interoperability within NATO, aligning with the country's modernization strategy.
