Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma has been crowned the new king of Tooro Kingdom in Uganda, succeeding the late King Oyo Nyimba. His ascension follows a contentious succession dispute after Oyo's death from cancer. The Ugandan government reportedly influenced the decision, despite claims from Oyo's mother about an unknown son who should inherit the throne. Kijanangoma, a former TV news presenter, was chosen by a royal clan committee and received the title Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I during a traditional ceremony. The coronation included various rituals, despite objections from Oyo's family regarding the legitimacy of the succession.
