A study from the University of Tübingen reveals that bird song preferences are influenced by sound intensity, frequency, and complexity. The common blackbird scored highest among 123 species evaluated by participants. Generally, softer and more complex sounds were preferred, regardless of listeners' knowledge about birds. The findings suggest that the enjoyment of bird songs is linked to fundamental acoustic characteristics rather than mere familiarity. Researchers propose that these insights could inform urban park designs to enhance natural soundscapes. However, simply playing bird songs through speakers may not improve well-being as effectively as experiencing them in nature. Further research is needed to understand the biological factors influencing these preferences and their implications for conservation efforts.
