A documentary short titled "Green Lava" featuring the Vatican's media institutions is set to enter the Oscar selection process for the first time. The film tells the story of Giacomo Mattivi, a young Italian with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, who copes with the loss of his brother, also affected by the same condition. Scheduled for screenings from September 18 to 24, 2026, at Lumiere Music Hall in Beverly Hills, the film will then proceed with its Oscar submission. Directed by Lia Beltrami and Ali Aksu, it showcases the stunning Dolomites landscape and emphasizes themes of resilience and community support. Paolo Ruffini from the Vatican highlighted the importance of Giacomo's story being shared widely. The Oscars will take place on March 15, 2027.
