A recent study published in The Lancet highlights a decline in childhood vaccination rates across several European countries post-Covid, raising concerns about the resurgence of infectious diseases. The analysis, covering data from 1980 to 2024, shows that while vaccination rates reached historic highs in some countries, others, like Romania, fell below 80%. Sixteen EU countries reported decreases in vaccination for at least four vaccines, with significant drops noted for meningitis B and polio. The pandemic is believed to have contributed to this decline, although the study did not explore specific causes. Researchers emphasize the urgent need for sustained high vaccination coverage to prevent disease outbreaks, as vaccinations have historically saved millions of lives.
