The severe drought in Europe has led to an unprecedented low water level in the Danube, prompting the controlled shutdown of Unit 1 at the Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant. This measure, announced by Nuclearelectrica, aims to ensure nuclear safety and protect cooling equipment. The shutdown will occur on July 28, 2026, at 11:00 AM, following forecasts from the National Institute of Hydrology. The expected peak consumption this week is around 7,300 MW, with domestic production estimated between 4,000 and 4,300 MW, supplemented by imports. Residential consumers will not face increased tariffs due to fixed annual contracts.
