Ungaria, condamnată de Curtea de Justiție a UE pentru o decizie a fostului guvern, condus de Viktor Orban
The Court of Justice of the EU ruled that Hungary violated EU law by converting prison sentences for human traffickers into special detention for reintegration, effectively leading to their release and expulsion. The court supported the European Commission's claim that Hungary's regulations did not provide effective and proportional sanctions. A government decision in 2023 allowed traffickers to be released and expelled within 72 hours, undermining EU immigration policies. The court found this measure disproportionate and lacking deterrent effect, as traffickers faced no real punishment. Consequently, Hungary was deemed to have failed its legal obligations under EU law regarding serious crimes.
