UNESCO has added an archaeological site in the West Bank and historic castles in southern Lebanon to its World Heritage List, despite Israeli objections, reigniting a long-standing cultural and political dispute. The decision was made during a meeting in South Korea, shortly after Israel's Foreign Ministry urged the committee to reject the nominations, labeling them as a misuse of cultural heritage. The site of Sebastia, identified as ancient Samaria, and five castles in the Mount Amel region were inscribed on both the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger. Israel, which withdrew from UNESCO in 2019, criticized the Palestinian delegation's actions as politically motivated. UNESCO stated that all nominations are evaluated based on the same criteria, without taking sides in political disputes.
