In 2025, Romania recorded the highest percentage of domestic tourist trips in the EU, with 89% of total travels being within the country. Eurostat reported that EU residents made 1.2 billion trips for personal or professional reasons, a 1.4% increase from the previous year. Of these, 848 million were domestic trips, accounting for 70%, while 264 million were to other EU countries. Spain followed Romania with 87%, and Greece, France, and Portugal each had 85%. Conversely, Luxembourg had only 5% of trips as domestic. Despite more internal trips, spending on foreign travel was higher, totaling €379.4 billion compared to €266.2 billion for domestic trips. Accommodation costs made up 34% of domestic travel expenses, while transport accounted for 21%.
