A 31-year-old Japanese monk, Taguchi Sogaku, has begun a strict 12-year religious retreat at Jōdoin temple on Mount Hiei. He will live in isolation, performing daily rituals and caring for the mausoleum of Saichō, the founder of the Tendai school. This retreat, known as Jūninen Rōzan-gyō, limits contact with the outside world and requires adherence to a rigorous daily schedule. Taguchi's retreat will conclude in 2038, when he will be 43 years old. This practice is one of the most challenging forms of asceticism in the Tendai tradition, with a history of harsh conditions that some monks have not survived. Taguchi is one of the few monks to undertake this responsibility in the post-war era, marking a significant commitment to his spiritual path.
