A strong El Niño phenomenon could lead to approximately 451,000 additional deaths globally from September 2026 to February 2027 due to rising temperatures. Researchers analyzed data from 24,378 regions, linking monthly temperatures to excess deaths from 1996 to 2025. The most affected countries are expected to be Nigeria, Indonesia, Sudan, India, and Brazil, with the U.S. also facing around 3,500 additional deaths. The current El Niño is described as unusually intense, surpassing previous records, and may cause droughts and extreme rainfall, impacting food security. This phenomenon serves as a warning for future climate conditions.
