The effects may persist into the summer of the following year. Researchers analyzed data from 24,378 regions, linking monthly temperatures to excess deaths from 1996 to 2025. The most affected countries are expected to be Nigeria, Indonesia, Sudan, India, and Brazil, with the U.S. also facing significant impacts. The current El Niño is described as unusually intense, surpassing previous records, and could lead to droughts and extreme rainfall, exacerbating food insecurity for millions.
