A monumental sculptural ensemble featuring a giant eagle and two griffins has been installed in University Square, marking the restoration of the historic University Palace's pediment. The original sculptures were destroyed during World War II bombings in 1944. Weighing 1.6 tons, the new bronze pieces were created by sculptor Alexandru Siminic and his collaborators. This installation is the first phase of a larger project to fully restore the sculptural ensemble over the next two years. The original pediment, designed by architect Alexandru Orăscu and sculptor Karl Storck, was completed in the late 19th century and symbolized the university's identity. The rector emphasized the historical significance of this restoration for Bucharest's cultural heritage.
