Un român din cinci are cel puțin 65 de ani: populația țării continuă să îmbătrânească accelerat

The number of elderly people in Romania is increasing rapidly, with significant regional disparities. According to the National Institute of Statistics (INS), as of January 1, 2026, there are 3,903,200 individuals aged 65 and over, making up 20.5% of the total population. The data highlights that the highest proportions of elderly are found in the North-East and South-Muntenia regions. The aging demographic poses pressure on the pension and healthcare systems, with 35.3% of households led by seniors. The average age in Romania remains below the EU average, but is steadily rising, indicating a structural imbalance between generations. The number of pensioners has slightly decreased, while those reaching retirement age has increased.
