A renowned two-Michelin-star restaurant in South Korea was fined for serving a dessert containing ants, which are not approved for consumption. The owner faced a fine of approximately €9,590, while the managing company was fined €6,350 for violating food safety laws. Initially sentenced to a year in prison and a higher fine, the owner received a reduced penalty due to his guilty plea and lack of prior convictions. The judge noted that the ants contained heavy metals above acceptable limits. The case emerged after the food safety ministry discovered online reviews featuring the controversial dessert, which had been served for nearly four years. Although banned in South Korea, ants are considered a delicacy in various regions worldwide.
