Initially thinking he was hit by a dolphin, Ismail realized he was being attacked by a shark when it pulled him underwater. He fought back, attempting to poke the shark's eye. After escaping, he managed to reach the shore with severe injuries, aided by fellow surfer Shannan Dunn. Despite the trauma, Ismail remained positive during his rescue. Just days later, another shark attack resulted in a fatality nearby, highlighting the ongoing risks of shark encounters in Australia.
