Emily Normandin-Parker had requested an Uber ride home when her friend became ill. The driver stopped on the highway and made the women exit the vehicle, after which Normandin-Parker was hit by another car. The judge ruled that the driver showed more concern for his vehicle than for the passengers' safety. Uber contended that the driver was an independent contractor and not their responsibility. The family rejected an initial settlement offer of $10 million from Uber, which included a confidentiality clause.
