An American researcher has discovered a massive crater on the Moon, named "McGetchin," formed by an impact event believed to have occurred in spring 2024. This crater, measuring 222 meters in diameter, is the largest newly formed crater identified in the solar system. The discovery was made using data from NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera, which has been studying the Moon since 2009. Observing the crater's formation in real-time could enhance our understanding of lunar geology. Unlike Earth, the Moon lacks an atmosphere, allowing meteoroids and asteroids to strike its surface without being slowed or burned up.
