An international team led by Romanian researcher Sergiu P. Pașca has achieved a breakthrough in regenerative medicine by genetically removing the cerebral cortex of rodents and successfully implanting human stem cell-derived tissue. This procedure, called xenocortication, allowed human cells to integrate into the animal's brain, demonstrating significant growth and functionality. The study highlights the potential for understanding neuropsychiatric disorders and testing new medications using living human tissue. The findings could revolutionize approaches to conditions like autism and schizophrenia, providing insights that were previously unattainable with traditional methods.
