European Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič is preparing for a visit to Beijing, aiming to return with clear indications of progress. The EU faces a significant trade deficit with China, which has reached about one billion euros daily, prompting concerns over industrial capacity loss. Šefčovič highlighted three main negotiation points: addressing the surge in Chinese exports, improving access for European exporters to the Chinese market, and ensuring stability in export controls from China. Ursula von der Leyen warned that the current trade situation is unsustainable and that the EU is ready to take action if necessary. The pressure is mounting for the EU to secure results from these discussions, with member states considering protective measures against rising imports.
