Ultima mare fabrică europeană de penicilină riscă să dispară. Europa ar putea depinde complet de China pentru antibiotice
The last fully integrated penicillin factory in Europe, located in Kundl, Austria, faces uncertainty due to competition from cheaper Chinese production. This situation raises concerns about Europe's dependency on China for antibiotics and active ingredients. As many competitors shut down or relocate to China, the Kundl facility has become central to discussions on Western self-sufficiency. Sandoz, the factory's operator, warns that without price increases from governments, its operations are commercially unsustainable. The rising energy costs in Europe further exacerbate the factory's challenges, as it consumes as much energy as a city. Sandoz has filed a complaint with the European Commission regarding China's market control and is awaiting an anti-dumping investigation.
