Chancellor Friedrich Merz plans to impose new sanctions on Russian entities, targeting 800 individuals and organizations, to be discussed next week in Ireland. The proposed sanctions package aims to significantly expand existing measures, with a target adoption date in mid-October. Diplomatic discussions will also address the controversial use of frozen Russian sovereign assets to aid Ukraine, which remains stalled due to Belgium's legal concerns. This initiative coincides with coordinated efforts by Sweden, Poland, the Netherlands, and Spain to pressure the European Commission to revive a blocked plan to utilize approximately 200 billion euros in immobilized Russian assets. Ukraine faces severe financial challenges, with President Zelensky highlighting a defense funding deficit of 23.1 billion euros.
