The European Commission has released a preliminary list of 32 non-OECD countries that may continue to import non-hazardous waste from the EU starting next year. This comes as the EU plans to ban waste exports to non-OECD countries, aiming for sustainable waste management. The list is open for public consultation until October 16. New regulations will restrict waste exports, requiring countries to demonstrate their capacity for sustainable processing. The EU aims to recycle more waste internally, addressing the contradiction of strict environmental standards while exporting significant waste volumes. The new rules also mandate independent audits for facilities outside the EU handling exported waste.
