The European Commission has proposed a common rating system for data centers to enhance energy transparency and support their sustainable integration into the European energy system. Recognizing the importance of data centers for Europe's digital future, the Commission aims to triple their capacity in the next five to seven years. However, this growth poses challenges, including increased energy consumption and pressure on natural resources. The proposed rating system will provide transparent information on resource usage and cover data centers with capacities over 500 kW. The first sustainability labels are expected by 2027, with a review planned for 2028. The Commission is also consulting on minimum performance standards for energy efficiency in data centers, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices in this rapidly growing sector.
