The European Union and the Philippines have reached a substantial free trade agreement after years of negotiations, marking a significant milestone for both parties. The official signing is scheduled for 2027, as confirmed by Manila. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the agreement following a call with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. This deal aims to strengthen ties with one of Southeast Asia's dynamic economies, potentially increasing trade beyond the current levels of 18 billion euros in goods and 10 billion in services. The EU is diversifying its trade partners, reducing reliance on the U.S. amid changing tariff policies.
