Turkey plans to gradually withdraw its troops from a key military base in northern Iraq and transfer control to the Iraqi government, as announced by both parties. This decision was made during a meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi at the UN General Assembly. Iraq has committed to taking action against foreign armed groups in the Sinjar region and restoring state authority there. Turkey established a military presence in the area in 2015 to combat ISIS and has conducted airstrikes against the PKK, which it considers a terrorist organization. This initiative reflects efforts to enhance cooperation between Turkey and Iraq after years of tension, focusing on shared water resource management and infrastructure projects.
